It seems like a story that really has two sides to it. Maybe you're on the side of the protagonist pushing away a birthday cake that could wind her up in the hospital, or maybe you empathize with the friend who could have easily forgotten about the allergy and meant well. 31-year-old pushes away birthday cake when she whiffs chocolate from it, 29-year-old baker friend leaves in tears despite knowing about friend's allergy: "She claimed to have forgotten about my issues with chocolate"
Welcome back ladies and gentlemen of the internet. If there was some collective money jar for every person claiming to have a food allergy or intolerance, the world would be rich. These days, food allergies and intolerances seem as common as denim jeans, first dates, and Netflix subscribers. It seems that everyone in the past 15 years of so just woke up one day and picked at random a food that claim they can't eat. I've heard and seen it all – from garlic to gluten, or beef to bananas, allergies to foods are more uniting these days than cultural meal time. It's interesting that if you go to certain other countries, they've never heard of gluten intolerance, or allergies to garlic. Call me crazy, but maybe there's some heresy going on here.
In the story below, the protagonist is allergic to chocolate. Besides second-hand grieving for her sad life bereft of the wonders of chocolate, she has a birthday and her baker friend bakes her a black forest cake.
